Goddamned fucking piece of SHIT. My PS2 isn't working, again. A friend was going to come over tonight and we were going to play FFXII, and dammit but I was looking forward to it. Booted it up, and it's not working. PS1 games work fine, but PS2 games and DVDs don't work at all, least not the ones I've tried. I get a sorta clunking noise, and it says no data. I was watching a DVD on it this afternoon, and it worked fine. I'm really pretty fucking pissed off. Last time it happened it righted itself in a few days, so hopefully it will again, but I suspect that it's on its way out... I don't want to buy a new one, and I certainly don't want a PS3. Too expensive, no games I want yet.

Date: 2008-04-11 04:22 am (UTC)Clunking/clicking noise usually means that the laser is misaligned and is struggling to read the disc. (As a side note, if you ever hear your computer click on boot it usually means that the hard drive reader head is about to die; in other words, get to backing your shit up fast.)
Lens might be dirty, also.
I heard that playing DVD movies on the thing isn't a good idea. Movies have the disc spinning non-stop for a period of several hours while games only spin it when data needs to be read/loaded.
Maybe standing the unit vertically will help?

Date: 2008-04-11 04:28 am (UTC)That's what I've heard, about the laser being misaligned. Odd that it started working again the first time, though. I dunno, I've seen several tutorials online about how to fix it yourself, but I don't want to risk that. I'll see if it works in a few days; if not, I guess I'll consider taking it somewhere. Don't want to spend the money on a new one; would prefer to spend it on a PSP. ^^;
I tried the vertical thing last time and it didn't work, so I don't hold out much hope... maybe I'll try, though.

Date: 2008-04-11 04:40 am (UTC)Mine throws a fit trying to play CD-based games. You should hear the noise it makes. >.>
I'd probably send it into Sony. $70, I think (or is it free?). If you take it into some guy, and he can't fix it, not only do you end up with a PS2 not covered by a warranty, but you still have to pay the guy for the service. :\ I wonder if the Sony Store (like the one at Park Royal) repairs these things..
You could probably get a cheap DVD player (or PS2, even) on Craigslist, or something.
Meh, consoles are made from shitty hardware - my friend's Wii died literally 3 days after he bought it.

Date: 2008-04-11 04:48 am (UTC)Heh, odd - mine does fine with CD-based games, but not DVD-based... crazy things.
I can't imagine that mine's covered by a warranty anymore, anyway - I've had it for 4+ years... I'll call around, if it comes to that, and ask for price quotes.
3 days? That's sad. o.o Funny, y'know - my Genesis, Saturn, and PS1 all still work perfectly (least afaik; my PS1 was fine last I tried, and I imagine my Sega systems still work fine), and I've had them for 8-12 years. I've had my PS2 four years, and it's crapping out. They really do make things worse these days, don't they? ^^;

Date: 2008-04-11 05:00 am (UTC)CD games are supposed to crap-out first because they spin faster..
The PS3 is actually doing pretty well on the not crapping-out thing. The other two - not so well. I'm amused because everything apart from the price (which doesn't really apply anymore), Sony's two products (PS3, PSP) have low failure-rates and are hardware-wise ahead of the competition. But nobody is paying them any attention. Instead everyone is enamoured by Nintendo's gimmick, or have given into Microsoft's 30%-failure-rate machine because it came out a year before everything else.
But yeah, cartridge-based systems have a longer lifespan because they don't have any sensitive moving parts. Although amusingly enough, everyone I know who had an NES had to do the "blow-into-cartridge" trick to get it to work..

Date: 2008-04-11 05:21 am (UTC)Go figure - strange that I'm having the opposite problem. ^^;
Go figure. I just kinda assumed by default that it'd be super buggy and shit, since this is Sony. ;) But yeah, I think it's pretty good overall... just, no games I want yet. Wii is nifty, but doesn't really have any games I want, either. I don't know much about how buggy Xbox 360 is, but it tends to have a lot of the most popular titles, I guess, which is why it does well. But, few RPGs so I'm not so interested.
Lol, I remember I used to have to hit Cecilia's NES to get it to work... not hard, but still had a give it a good whap. ^^;
Sometimes I still secretly want an NES so I can play FFI on the original. :) Also want an SNES, just out of principal, so I can own FFIV/VI/CT/SoM (still haven't played that...). Which reminds me, I had a dream while ago where I bought an original FFIV... hee.

Date: 2008-04-11 05:35 am (UTC)The 360 just dies on you. The failure rate is 16-30%.
If you want an S/NES, you really should get your hands on something like this:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=1kcCbgVkfY4 which is basically an SNES and NES built into one. I think it plays games from multiple regions, as well. It's pretty cool - I'd be all over it if I didn't get off on piracy so much.

Date: 2008-04-11 05:54 am (UTC)Sweeeet. It plays import Super Famicon games, too! Mmm, original FFV cartridge... I seem to recall seeing one when I was in Japan. It excited me. :) You can buy it here - http://store.videogamecentral.com/retroduo-white-blue.html - only $49.99...

Date: 2008-04-11 05:59 am (UTC)And yeah, you would, looking at the prices for the original systems there. Dunno bout eBay, though.

Date: 2008-04-13 02:08 am (UTC)Nope, no luck with that. I'll keep trying periodically, maybe it'll miraculously start working again like last time...

..
Actually don't. It'll probably explode or something.

Date: 2008-04-13 02:12 am (UTC)I tried jiggling it. And smacking it around a bit, lol, in hopes that it might realign the lens (yeah, yeah, I know...).
