Hmmm... if I were to stop this download (my Smallville eps; it's a 4 gig file, around 65% done), would I be able to watch the first ep then start it again and have it resume from the same place? I've resumed downloads a few times, but other times it hasn't worked...

It's possible, but more probable that it's not.

BitTorrent does not download files linearly. For example, say a file has 10 "pieces" and you have "50%" of the file. This does not mean that you have the first five pieces: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

BitTorrent is a swarming application. Pieces of files are downloaded at random to fill the "shell" that gets allocated before you connect to peers.

So it's probable that within that "65%" you have completely downloaded the first episode; however, chances are that's not the case. It may or may not work, but you'll most likely stumble across graphical glitches, sound glitches, freezes, choppiness, and so forth.

Resuming files should always work. You either deleted the file before or began the download from scratch in a different directory.

Yeah, so I discovered... *sigh* Tried to watch, and it kept stopping. Gave up. Back to staring as the download moves a percent every half hour... -_- God I'm bored. ^^

The best thing to do is just to leave it on over night and throughout the entire day. How fast do you download there?

Hehe if I lived in the residence there I'd go talk to the network admins about opening ports 6881-6999 so I don't get hit by any firewalls. :p

I've left it on since I think Thursday.. ^^;; It's going ~4 kb/s, and it's 4.6 gigs. *sigh*

Hmm, don't think I'm surrounded by a firewall, since I'm able to send and receive through MSN - couldn't do that at home b/c I had a firewall there.

I'm almost positive that you are. They might have the ports that MSN uses for file transfer open, whereas they're closed at home.

If you want to find out, run this test: http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl

*looks over test* Meh, might do it later... doesn't really matter, I suppose. Either way it's still bloody slow. ^^

Meh, you're right. I mean, if you were at home you could correct the problem yourself, or at least try to. But since the control that you posses over the network only extends to as far as your terminal at the university, there's not much you can do. Unless, your network admins are reeeeeeealy nice. But then opening BT's ports for you would also do the same for the entire campus, and that would be bad for bandwidth. :p

Doesn't matter that much. I mean, I really can't do anything about it, and I don't care to try. ^^ I'll survive.
