This looks fun...

1. Do you remember your first ever thing you were fannish about as a wee one?

Hmm, discounting my general Disney-love as a child (not fannish in the slightest, just typical childhood Disney love ^^), I'd have to say Sonic the Hedgehog. Started when I was in grade 5 and [livejournal.com profile] bk635 introduced me to Sonic 2 and I got addicted... went from the games to the comic books, which I read vociferously for a couple of years. I read my first fanfic in this fandom and used the comic books to learn to draw. Good times. :)

2. What fandom was your first (fic) reading fandom?

Sonic again. I still remember the first fics/author I ever read in this fandom... and oh my god, just for kicks I went and Googled him and he's still there along with all his fic. OMG the memories! Check out his website - totally a relic of the typical mid-late '90s websites, lol... can't have been updated for years, I would imagine. But it's all still there... I used to have this fic printed out and I read it over and over and cried every time, and it was really quite a disturbing and R-rated story... not sure what that says about me. ;) (and actually, after a bit more Googling... seems he's still involved in fandom after all these years. Website still looks like it's right out of the 90s, though, dunno if it's been updated or not and can't be bothered to look more deeply. ^^)

(for the record, my second fic reading fandom was Sailormoon, from gr6 to gr8 or so. That was probably my first long-time fandom that I was quite heavily involved in, at least in terms of reading a lot of fic as well as writing some. Didn't participate online or anything, but did a lot of fannish stuff (drawing, card collecting (and yes I still have them all), live action role-playing (kinda... long story... few of you on here still should know what I'm referring to ^_^) with my friends.)

3. Are you very monofannish or a fickle fannish butterfly?

Bit of both. I tend to get really heavily into one fandom for anywhere from 1 month to 1-2 years, with other fandoms always on the periphery. Right now it's pundit fandom, as ya'll may have noticed. ;) I suppose the overall (approx.) breakdown of my main fandoms would be:

Sonic (~'95-97)
Sailormoon (~'96/97 - '99)
Final Fantasy/Xenogears/other RPGs (mainly '99-00, and then 2004 again when I played FFX, but it's still a general ongoing background fandom/hobby)
Fushigi Yuugi, Rurouni Kenshin (and other anime, but mainly those two) (00-01)
Harry Potter (01-03 were my most fannish years, but I doubt I'll ever stop loving the books and though fandom kinda scares the shit outta me I still read the occasional fic)
Buffy/Angel (late '02 - '04 or '05, hard to remember the exact time, but once Angel finished in '04 I gradually started moving away from the fandom. Still love the shows in a nostalgic way, though)
Naruto followed closely by Full Metal Alchemist ('04-'05)
Lost ('05-'06, mainly)
Oz ('06-'07)
Scrubs (late '07)
Iron Man ('08)
a very brief but fic-reading-heavy Dark Knight/Batman phase in mid-late '08
Pundits! (from late '08 to present).

There's a TON of other fandoms in there, but generally they weren't ones where I had a super intense obsession with for a particular period of time (well, maybe a bit, but not as prolonged as the above). Those include House, Supernatural, Veronica Mars, Prison Break, Firefly, Farscape, lots of different anime in my teens... other stuff I'm probably forgetting... and of course many of those I still love or am somewhat fannishly into.

And it's not in the above list because it deserves a special mention and because I was never really fannish about it, per se: Babylon 5, which I first watched in '99 between grades 8 and 9, approximately, and was really into in gr9/10, then stupid Space stopped airing the eps summer between gr10 and 11. Bought all the DVDs when they came out a few years later, and still love it to bits. Probably always will, even as it gets increasingly dated each year. Because, as I discovered during my (sixth) rewatch last year, for all that yeah s1 is quite dated and not particularly great even taking that into account, once I got to the end of s1 then into s2... it just all started flooding back and I remembered why I loved the show and how absolutely fucking brilliant it is and... yeah. This show will always, always be special to me in a way that no other will, I suspect.

4. Did you ever feel really fannish and obsessed about a tv show/movie/book, etc. but without having the desire to write/read fan fic?

*points above* Babylon 5 would be the main one, though I've read the occasional fic and written a couple/drawn some fanart. Ultimately for me the canon is just so rewarding and the narrative so tight (okay yeah, there are loose ends to be explored and lots of possibilities in the universe, but the main storyline for me is perfect as is) that I feel no need to explore it further through fic. Farscape and Firefly are two other shows and fandoms I love to bits, but have little desire for fic (read some Firefly fic, but not really interested). Yet I love Firefly fandom offline, like going to conventions and stuff... Browncoats are just so fantastic in general. :)

5. Did you ever have a fandom that was totally ruined for you by canon and/or fandom politics?

Hmm, I don't think so. I gradually migrated away from Harry Potter fandom in part because it was fucking insane, but mostly because I got into Buffy. ^^ House fandom, a bit - combination of fandom being fucking insane, show being kinda so-so for a few years there (though I think I'm in the minority of having quite enjoyed s4-5. Just didn't like s3), and moving onto other things. Ditto with Lost fandom. But I've never had a fandom ruined for me, I don't think. Usually I just drift away, even if canon or fandom politics play a part in that.

6. Where were you fannishly in 2003?

Buffy and Angel, primarily. And still Harry Potter a fair amount (went to Nimbus 2003 that summer, the first HP conference and my own first conference! good times).

7. Where were you fannishly in 2005?

Lost, totally. So obsessed that summer, between s1 and 2. Ahh, all the good Jack/Sawyer fics... and the young!Jack/James AUs... and the general awesomeness and excitement for s2. 2005 was also, to a lesser extent, the year of House (from August on). Think that's it, other than FMA at the start of 2005.

That was an enjoyable waste of time. :) I like recalling my fannish history... so many fandoms these past 10+ years! Wow. Wonder what'll be next...? *clings to pundits* Not ready to give them up quite yet. ;)

And no, I haven't watched SPN yet. WOE. Was out all day, and upon returning found my roommate having a mini party/pre-drinks in the living room. Hung around for awhile but far too loud to watch it (I need complete silence and concentration, lol!), then wandered out to get Subway around 10 because I was hungry and needed to get out of here. Ran into a friend and hung out for awhile and by the time I returned at 10:45 or so the place had cleared out other than one roommate watching a movie in the living room. suppose I could've watched it then, but waiting now until tomorrow in hopes of an empty apartment, non-hurting teeth (still hurts, yeah... on and off), and being fully awake (it's 12 now and I'm too tired...).
