FF ramblings

I happened to check Rpgamer.com a few minutes ago and noticed that FFIII:DS comes out today (I haven't really been keeping track...). I'm probably just being too over-emotional, but this day feels rather historic in the RPG world - the last Final Fantasy that wasn't released in the US is finally here. I checked, and it's been approximately 16.5 years since FFIII was released in Japan - well, better late than never, I guess. XD I mean sure, I played it years ago on a translated ROM and I won't be buying this version anytime soon (lack of a DS... and lack of time to play. woe.), but it's still cool to think that it's here. It's sort of a pity that the original version of the game will never make it here, most likely (how hard would it have been to include the orignal version in the new game, really...?), but the new version looks pretty spiffy. Hopefully I'll get to play it someday.

3 FF games in the past 2 weeks, 2 of which are new to the US (FFXII and FFIII:DS) and one of which only ever made it here in a mangled fashion (FFV Advance) - makes me miss the days when I could play all the time... I haven't really been into gaming as much the last few years, largely because of a. lack of time during school, b. other interests take up my free time, and c. i'm lazy., but I still get excited hearing about games and still want to play when I get the chance. I'm way behind on all the games I'm playing, but I still plan to ask for either FFXII or Disgaea 2 for Christmas (leaning towards the latter - FFXII will be easy enough to find for years to come, and it'll get cheap fairly quickly, whereas Disgaea 2 will start disappearing soon...). I am sorely tempted by FFXII, though - it's been getting fantastic reviews, and hell, it's FFXII! We've been waiting for this game for years, and it's finally here... and I really can't justify the time or money to get it. Part of me, too, is still a bit uncertain about it - but most of the reviews have said that the game is nothing like (and much better than) anything we've seen of it to this point, including the demo. I plan to give it a chance eventually, but can't do it yet.

And... I'm procrastinating. Back to my Farscape paper... it's due tomorrow at 9, so I need to get moving. Up to 5 pages, need about 12 - and I'm still blathering on about the context, haven't even gotten to analysing the series itself! Ehehehe. baaack to work.

Fuck, that's... just, fuck. Just made a post about it, so you can see my thoughts there. Got this just as I was waiting for the bus at UBC; making use of my last few minutes with UBC wireless on my iPod. Was promptly depressed for the entire ride home. It's amazing, really, how much of an effect he had on all our lives that we're genuinely sad about this. Didn't even know the man, but it still feels like we've lost someone we knew. He was a damned good actor, and he had so much potential. I heard somewhere else that it may have been wholly unintentional because he was taking drugs to help him sleep. Though it seems hard to imagine how you could overdose like that unless you were suicidal or addicted... but we may never know, and I don't want to judge either way. No matter what, it's a hell of a tragedy. His poor, poor daughter... looking at the poster of him and Jake on my wall depresses me now. ;(

I do feel for his family and friends. It's never easy grieving through a loss.

But I personally can't say I'm all that sad. I don't know; I guess it's just that I don't have an interest in actors and other celebrities. I don't think they have much of an impact on me. I don't know, it's hard to articulate. People ask "Want to go see that movie?" and people respond "Who's in it?" while I just respond "Sure." Guess I'm just different in that way.

It really depends, I suppose. There are lots of actors whose deaths wouldn't effect me much, but some actors can have a powerful impact on a lot of us. I guess it's because we see them so often, we feel like on some level we know them. We don't, of course, but we still feel connected to them. But of course it depends on the person; not everyone feels that way and that's fine. :) I wasn't a huge fan of his, but I was fond of him and he was in one of my favourite movies.. .and he was so damned good in it; Jake was fantastic, too, but in some ways Heath really carried that movie. I can't imagine anyone else in that role... I was looking forward to where he career would go; hoping we'd see him win an Oscar someday. He certainly deserved it. Who knows, maybe at next year's Oscars for his role as Joker... I've heard he's good in it, based on the little we've seen (namely trailers, granted). I'm looking forward to that movie, anyway, even if it'll be.. strange to see him. *sniff*

They'll probably toss in an "In memory of..." at the end of the new Batman movie (I still haven't seen the first). Though maybe they should add it in at the beginning so that people will see; a lot don't stick around for the end of credits, which is where it would likely be. >.>

Yeah, probably.. would be kinda nice if they included that. I also hope that, if the Oscars go on (which they're supposed to, stars or no stars), that we see him in the memorial reel... I presume he will be, if it's not too late for this year's. I'm still vaguely bitter that Andreas Katsulas wasn't in the memorial reel when he died... but considering that Heath was nominated for an Oscar, he certainly will be.

Man, I'm still kinda shocked.. I keep thinking that he's dead and going "whaaat?" I want to go check out his other movies, now... only ever seen him in BBM, Knight's Tale (love that movie, am unashamed about it), and the bit of Casanova that I could sit through before turning it off.

Re: Batman, check out the first one, it's well done.. I confess I've never seen any of the original movies, but I enjoyed this one. :)

I can't stand the original Batman movies - they are so boring.

You should see Monster's Ball. It's a really good movie; depressing, too. Heath Ledger was in it. His role isn't very big, but he's in it. Peter Boyle was also in it; desite what I said above, I found him brilliant in Everybody Loves Raymond (yeah..) and he was good in Monster's Ball too. He's probably the only actor (that I can momentarily think of) that impacted me enough for me to care about his death.
