Here's the obligatory post-Christmas post, a few days late because I've been lazy and have been busy playing with my new toys. ;p I had a great Christmas; got pretty much everything I wanted as well as some other cool stuff. I've been very lazy since, mostly sitting around playing Dragon Quest VIII and watching DVDs. I've started doing a little bit of work on one of my essays, but I'm frustrated because I really don't know what I'm going to say. And I really, really, don't want to work on it. ;_;

- Dragon Quest VIII Shiny game. I'm ~5-6 hours in, though most of that has been spent exploring and level raising, so I haven't gotten very far. It's very good, though. The battle system is traditional and wonderfully solid, and battles are generally challenging. The game looks amazing, too - not just the actual graphics, but the level of detail they put into it. The world map is beautiful and expansive - I love how the sky shifts from day to night every so often, and you can actually watch the sky changing colour. It's very fun and addicting, too. I can't speak for the storyline yet because I'm not very far, but from what I've heard it's fairly simple but well-done. As for the FFXII demo, I've played one of the two missions, and, like many people, my feelings are mixed. After awhile I got the hang of the battle system, but I don't really like it. Too jumbled, confusing, and fast-paced. Still, I'll wait and see what the final version is like. It's certainly pretty, it anything.

- plush Tonberry finally! *squee* I managed to find an online store that sold them (for a pretty hefty fee, but it still beats Ebay), sent the URL to my mom, and bugged her about it for a month. I'm so happy. :) He's so cute and cuddly and... green. I've been wanting one for years, but they're pretty hard to find. Used to only be able to find them on Ebay for a shitload of money, but they occasionally pop up in stores. Still expensive, but better than having to bid. Will post pictures later.

- strategy guide for DQ8. May take this back, cause although the maps are nice it's not that useful. If I really need help in the game, I'll need more detailed help than what the guide provides, and that's what Gamefaqs.com is for...

- Firefly. Yay, finally. Now I can lend it out and convert more people. I made my mom watch the pilot, though I'm not sure if she was that interested. She couldn't follow it very well. <_< I'm so happy to finally own it, though. Watched most of the extras last night, and am planning to start on the commentaries tonight.

- Serenity Visual Companion. Shiny.

- [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's Movies in Fifteen Minutes. Hell yes. For those that don't know, [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda writes hilarious movie parodies ([livejournal.com profile] m15m), and she recently got a book of them published. I showed them to my mom monthes ago and she liked them, and I mentioned offhand awhile ago that her book was out now (though only in the UK). I completely forgot about it afterwards and didn't remember to ask for it for X-mas, but evidently she remembered. ^^ It's so cool to own a book that basically started on Livejournal.

- Firefly soundtrack.

- The Chronicles of Narnia. Gotta read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for my Children's Lit class next term. ^^;

- Gryffindor scarf from my Grandmother, which I requested from her a few weeks ago. Just like my Slytherin one, except, you know, red and yellow. :) She's also in the process of making me a Jayne hat, though I'm not quite sure what she thinks about that. o.o

- HP: GoF calendar

- various other books, clothes, random stuff that is non-fannish and doesn't interest me as much... plus another copy of the Lost: Chronicles book cause Mom didn't know I owned that. Taking it back tomorrow.

Heh, yes, my Mom puts up with my hunger for fannish crap every Christmas remarkably well. I mean hell, look at Puppet!Angel last year (still can't believe she bought me that. o.o). I don't think she can quite believe some of the stuff she buys me, either. ^^

Anyway, tomorrow I'm coming into town in order to go to a doctor's appointment, go shopping (aka return/exchange stuff and buy new stuff), and possibly see Harry Potter 4 again. [livejournal.com profile] garran, are you still interested in seeing that? Because if you want, you can meet me at Metrotown ~7 to see it. Though I think my mom is coming, too. ^^

I'm on a bit of a Firefly kick right now... I blame it on getting the DVDs and various other stuff. I've spent most of today and last night hunting down good fics; I don't usually read much Firefly fic, and I'd like to read more. I read a really good Wash-centric fic last night that managed to take what is normally a hideous cliche and make a remarkly good fic out of it. Looking forward to the next chapter, and I'm now not only on a Firefly kick but on a random Wash kick. Not quite sure why. ^^

Don't want to work... *sigh* I'm completely stuck on this essay, and have very little idea of what I want to say or what my thesis is. I've been reading through various books on Dickens and trying to get a handle on what others have said on the subject (women in David Copperfield), but I'm still not sure what to say. I really need to decide exactly what my thesis is and what side I want to argue. My goal is to be able to write the actual essay this weekend, so at least one of my three essays will be done before I go back to school. Then straight onto my Shakespeare essay, probably, then eventually my History one (have a long ways to go on that one).

Oh well, off to play DQVIII read fanfic work on my essay...

*30 minutes after I wrote that last line* Okay, instead I went to search for a Wash icon, in keeping with what I said above. :) It's not quite what I was looking for (I wanted one with the 'leaf on the wind' quote, but couldn't find one I liked enough cause I'm too damned picky), but it's good anyway. I'm going to be in N. Van tomorrow, so you can come check them out then. And we could write comments on the back of them; I've been meaning to do that, but haven't gotten around to it. I'm prob going to be home from ~11-3.

How was your Christmas?

Do you want to borrow the FFXII demo?

Nah. That game isn't something I care about.

Mmkay.

So, what about tomorrow? Do you want to come over and check the pictures out?

Yeah, if you're going to be in North Vancouver tomorrow then I guess I should come over. I'll probably be around sometime after Noon to 2-ish..

Okay. Give me a call before you come. Try my home # first, and barring that my cell. I should be there, though. I'll let you know if anything changes.

Playing and liking Final Fantasy XII is like reading and liking a Harry Potter book not written by J. K. Rowling.

Hmm... I don't know what to think about it so far, really. I mean, it is just a demo, and I'm hoping that the final version will still be good. I admit that it's not looking that great, though. And it's the first FF without Sakaguchi, right? Aside from XI and X-2 (and we all know how that turned out... ^^). I'm rather skeptical about it, especially the way that the world is lifted straight out of FFTA. And I don't particularly like the battle system. Still, I'm just going to wait and see what the final version is like. I'll probably end up buying it anyway, unless it gets really really bad reviews. It's hard to judge a game based on the demo and a few previews, though admittedly it's not looking too promising so far...

Also, your analogy is problematic when you take fanfiction into consideration, but never mind that. XD

I've never been into fanfiction, so I never considered it. :p

I think it's the first one without Sakaguchi, Uematsu, and Amano, but I'm not really sure about Amano, though. All Sakaguchi does now is give it his "seal of approval", and who knows how much that really means. Square has been with the series for probably 20 years now, so I'm sure they could pull off a passable installment of the series without those three, but I'm just worried that the vision and "touch" won't be there. That's why I used Harry Potter as an analogy. I mean, I'm sure that it has some fans since the beginning that are talented enough to write a Harry Potter book that's worthy of the title, but it just wouldn't be the same as it would be if Rowling wrote it; you know what I mean?
