Buffy re-watching - Becoming parts 1 & 2
May. 1st, 2010 11:54 pmAhhh, I love so much that Much Music has been airing Buffy the past month or so. They finished season 2 this past week; I'd Tivo-ed the last 2 eps since I was busy (never mind that I own the DVDs, heh, it's different when it's airing on TV) and i just watched them. Haven't seen Becoming pts 1/2 in years, god, I don't even know when I last saw them - I only ever saw those eps a couple of times, I think (too depressing, heh). I'd almost forgotten just how good this show is, and also just how awesome Buffy herself is. She's such an amazing, strong, inspirational character, and I just love her so much in those two episodes. The final few scenes always break my heart, because it's just not fair that she had to make those kinds of decisions at such a young age. That moment when she kills Angel to save the world, even after knowing that he has his soul back, is easily one of the best of the series.
(and, snarkily - I'd like to see Bella kill Edward to save the world, HAH. Yeah right. Buffy is so many times the character and the woman that Bella is. Can you imagine Buffy deciding to become a vampire to be with Angel or Spike forever and ever?? Yeah, no.)
Anyway, it was rather good timing for Much to start airing Buffy when it did, because it started around the time that![[profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
f_march_madness was going on and people were campaigning for Buffy, and all the pictures and animated gifs and such reminded me of just how awesome and amazing she was, then I found out that Much was airing the show again. And god, season 2 really is fantastic. I'd always known that, of course, but... Innocence, Passion, and Becoming still break my heart utterly, and watching Buffy grow over the course of the season is amazing - from Innocence, where the wound is just too fresh and she doesn't yet have the strength to kill Angel (but still knowing that she will be ready eventually), to Becoming, where she kills him even after he's got his soul back, because she has to. She really grows up in season 2, from the worst circumstances imaginable.
Also, this (yoinked fromstarryeyedmagic's comment in the final round of f_march_madness, because it's awesome):
Angelus: Now that's everything, huh? No weapons... No friends... No hope. Take all that away... and what's left?
Buffy: Me.
That, right there, one of the best scenes of the show - it sums up Buffy herself so perfectly.
(and on a more amusing note, speaking of things that amused me - this little exchange betweem Buffy and Spike, which kinda eerily foreshadows their s6 relationship.
Buffy: I hate you.
Spike: You need me.
Fitting, no? ^^ Go figure... if only they could've known!)
Anyway... on to season 3 now. Faith! The Mayor! WESLEY. OH YEAH. He may have been an obnoxious prat in Buffy s3, but dammit he was my obnoxious prat and I love him, even then. Because when you look back at that season, taking into account his character on Angel, it all makes so much more sense...
Oh, and on a very tangentially related note - I was very excited to see Stephanie Romanov pop up on due South! Yeah, I'm almost at the end of the series (few eps left now, gonna miss it when I finish!). Had a lot of fun with that ep, because hello, Stephanie Romanov! Also, Fraser in a tux, just sayin'. But yeah, reminded me of my Wes/Lilah-loving days; I totally had a crush on her. ^^ They were so damned hot together. Good times.
(and yeah, due South is it's own whole post, because wow am I loving this show. I watched Good for the Soul last night with Mom, aka the s4 Christmas ep, aka easily the second best ep of s4 so far after Ladies Man (which, my GOD, that episode!). Funny and sad and touching and beautifully shot, and that blink-and-you'll-miss-it glorious moment of Ray wearing Fraser's Stetson at the very end. Oh if only he'd turned around! Awesome anyway, even if it was just a short glimpse. I went online after, and immediately found several good post-ep Ray/Fraser stories, so yay. God bless old fandoms! There is SO MUCH fic in this fandom, it's glorious!)
