Just got home from Movie Under the Stars, which was a rousing success... I don't think I've mentioned it here yet, so for those that don't know, my credit union organized a screening of Horton Hears a Who on a big inflatable screen outside in a park on the island. :) Our head office did it last year, too, but this was the first year we did it down here. We've been working on it for monthes - well, mostly my co-worker, really, who's taken on most of the marketing and such for the branch and who corresponded with the marketing dep't at head office to get this organized.

Everything went off really well - we had about 600 people show up (island population in the summer's prob round 6-7 thousand, so that's not bad I guess...). I arrived around 5 to help them start setting up, and we (the three of us at the branch, some staff from head office who came down to help, and the board members for our branch) had a barbeque round 6. People started trickling in ~7. I somehow got roped in (NO idea how...) to dressing up as our mascot ("His name is Super Saver! He helps people save money! And he lives in the vault at the credit union!") and walking around waving at people and hugging kids and stuff. o.o Never done that before... hot as hell in that thing, and it was almost 8 by that point and the weather outside had cooled a fair amount (it was scorching all day... which was perfect, really, because it meant that by the time the movie started round 9 the temperature was just right). I don't know how people do it at Disneyland in 35 degree heat. o.o Only was out there for 10 minutes, and that was plenty. But it was fun - lots of the kids loved it, and a few of the youngest ones ran away from me which was pretty hilarious.

So yeah, movie started bout 9, just as it got dark enough. We'd filmed a brief blurb about the credit union that was at the start of the film - damn thing took about 25 takes to get right, and it was only 30 seconds... there's a blooper reel, which we'd PLANNED to show after the credits, but for whatever reason our video editor guy decided not to show it. Boo. :( But I think they're going to put it on the website... Anyway, I've seen Horton Hears a Who before and wasn't especially enamoured with it, but it was lots of fun watching it outside like that and I actually enjoyed the movie more the second time around.

Overall, it went great, and I couldn't be happier... well, maybe if they'd showed the bloopers. ^^ And I can't help but wish that it'd been a movie I liked more, though it's quite a cute movie, really, and we needed it to be suitable for all ages. Still, couldn't help but think - how AMAZING would it have been to have shown, say, Iron Man? I'd have freaking loved to have seen it on the big screen outside like that... but realistically, it wouldn't have been viable - it's at least PG-13, and while it's probably fine for say 8-9 and up, it's too scary for the really young kids. Of which Bowen has MANY. ^^ But MAN it would have been cool. Boss even said that it'd been one of the movies initially considered (along with Narnia and Indiana Jones), but all three were considered too violent and adult, and we needed something G-rated. I would've liked Wall-E, but the movie had to be at least 3 monthes old or something. Oh well. But yeah, it's actually quite a fun movie, and was perfect for this kind of event since so many little kids were there. There are a ton of families on Bowen - in fact, I think we have one of the highest numbers of children per capita or whatever in Canada.

Busy day, anyway. Afternoon I was helping Dad with an outdoor art show he was curating (for another artist, that is. Oh well. But he got paid, at least. ^^). Sat in the shade and directed traffic for a couple of hours... and read, cuz it wasn't especially busy. Also checked out the annual book sale down at the library - they had a VHS copy of the first Tim Burton Batman which I coveted, since I haven't seen it and I can't find it in any local video store, but had no cash on me at the time, and when I went back later it was gone. Boo. Big day on Bowen - at least 4-5 events going on the same day. o.o (Dad's show, our movie, the book sale, Bowfeast (the 'eat only food from within 100 miles' day, which I think on Bowen we try to reduce to just food from on the island. There was some kind of farmer's market set up for it beside the book sale)... it was crazy busy in the cove in the morning. And in the middle of it all, the power went out. Twice. On a beautifully sunny, wind-free, 30 degree heat day. Wtf. Had to write a cheque to the lady at the outdoor hot dog stand cuz I didn't have any cash and the ATM was offline. Heh.

Tomorrow, nothing planned. Whee. ^^ But next weekend is Bowfest, which is the Big Day on the island. I think I've gotten roped in to playing the mascot again for the parade, which I may agree to depending on the weather. If it's hot out, forget it. If they really want someone to do it, they're gonna find someone else... I'm also volunteering for Run for the Ferry, an annual race which happens the morning of Bowfest. I'm taking care of registrations... well, in part. And evidently running in it. Well, walking...

On another note, I have to get my fall TV schedule worked out. Need a list of premiere dates, and a weekly schedule. Gonna miss quite a few of the premieres since I'll be in Europe, though... woe.
