I'm putting this out there for anyone in Vancouver who may be interested... and because we're frankly getting kinda desperate for registrations. The first annual (we hope) "Write on Bowen! A Festival for Readers and Writers" is taking place this July on Bowen Island, conceived of and organized mainly by my mother (and I helped a bit...). There's going to be a range of activities for both readers and writers, including readings, workshops, panels, and a gala. Our headline guest is George McWhirter, the innaugural Poet Laureate for Vancouver. More information on the events and schedule can be found here: http://biac.ca/writersfestival/. The festival will take place from July 11-13, with most of the events on Saturday the 12th (though opening night is the 11th, and that's when George McWhirter will be reading).

You can register for the Festival events and workshops in three ways:

1. Go online to www.biac.ca/writersfestival, click the Register link, and complete the online form. You can pay using your VISA or Paypal account.

2. Pick up a registration form from the Gallery @ Artisan Square or Phoenix Books. If you live on Bowen Island, you'll be receiving a registration form in your mailbox the week of July 1. You can also download and print a registration form from the Web site. Send the completed form to WRITE ON BOWEN, Box 211, Bowen Island, BC V0N 1G0 or drop it off at the Gallery.

3. Call 604 947 2454.

So yeah, if you're interested in all things literary, or are a budding writer, then come check it out! Bowen's only a 15-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, and it's gorgeous over here in summer. Plus you get to come visit me. ;) I'll be helping out at various events; I'm introducing and organizing the workshop on screenplay writing, and I think I'm selling books or something at lunch.. whatever Mom tells me to do, really. ^^;

And if you know anyone who may be interested, please spread the word! We've put rack cards all over Vancouver, but we still need to tell as many people as possible.

Oh man! This is a really great idea and I'm completely torn about wanting to go. :( I should go to rub shoulders, network, and maybe get some editing of my stuff, and of course hang out with you and such. But … I also don't feel like I'd be learning all that much by attending any of the workshops, and even for the editing thing, I'd get free, gentle critique of an entire novel by sending it to Dad…. Plus, I am, as usual, working that weekend (this probably won't stand in my way if I decide "for" though).

Man, man, man, I feel like I should but I don't think I'm going to register. I don't think it would ultimately be anything more than I'd get through Dad and his various contacts. Sorry!

In other news, though, I am now in possession of a free ticket to the VAG for some time in the month of July. KRAZY! is apparently extremely good, with the least well-curated section being video games, and a full day is recommended. I'm going to be writing down the rest of my work schedule for the month today, since I've only got up to the 12th, but are there any times or dates that would suit you? If you want to go together, that is. I know we'd discussed it.

Fair enough. :) Though you could always consider one of the free panels, and there's also the opening night readings. But yeah, if you don't think you'll get much out of them, then not much point paying the money to come up here for it. Oh well, maybe next year. :)

That said, you're of course welcome to come up here some weekend to hang out! We could go to the beach then come back here and watch obscene amounts of TV or bad movies. ;) You can crash on my couch, though it's just a 2-seater so it might be a bit tight... or the floor, I guess. o.o

Def want to go to KRAZY! Saturday or Sunday works for me; I work Mon-Fri now. So... whenever, really. Except the weekend of the festival. obviously. *grin* Let me know a weekend you're off when you know, and I'll see if it works. I don't have many long term plans for the summer right now, so most weekends should be fine.

I will consider the free panels. I don't work until 7 on the 12th. It could be doable, were there something to interest me. ^^ The readings on the 11th are a no-go. I work until 11:30 pm.

I don't actually get weekends off these days. I get days midweek, like Weds and Thurs, or Mon and Weds. Maybe August will be better for that. But I don't start working until 7 on the 5th, 6th, or 27th, so any of those days would be best. However… Tues. and Thurs. run until 9. I've got the 15th, 17th, 22nd, and 31st off as well, though that wouldn't really give us much time to see everything.

Are those dates July or August? Anyway... well, whenever works for you, then - whenever you get off earlier on a weekend or something. Unfortunately my schedule is set, so I don't have any flexibility... :( Cept for holidays, ie Aug 4th, but the exhibition might not be open that day. Also, if you ever want to come up during the week if you're off, then feel free. :) You could get the 4:30 and we'd have all evening, then you could take the 9:30am or whatever ferry home. Just something to think about for sometime. :) Or maybe Aug 4th would be good for that if we wanted to do it, because I'm off and I'm guessing you guys might be closed...?

Oh, sorry, those are July. I'd reeeally like to go this month, seeing as how I've got this free ticket an' all. I s'pose I could switch around a weekend or something. Or … this upcoming weekend I don't have to work until 7 either day, and the same goes for the 12th and 27th. The gallery opens at 10, I think, so we'd have a decent amount of time there.

That actually sounds kind of interesting. I may just do that at some point. Not the 14th/15th, because the parentals are in town, but maybe my other days off later on…

Sadly, we don't seem to close for stats. Didn't for Canada Day, didn't for the May long weekend, probably won't for BC Day either. :( Do get double-time, however, and I could request the day off… XD

As for the Bowen Writers' Fest, I've looked at the talks and none of them interest me. Sorry.

Tomorrow sounds good - I was planning on coming down anyway and was hoping for something more interesting to do than errands. ^^; I could take the 9:30 down and meet you there round 10:30-11. I want to pop into a few stores downtown, too, after the show.. Golden Age, for one. ;)

Cool, yeah, we'll have to work something out sometime...

And no worries. :) Just thought I'd suggest it in case it interested you.

Okay, tomorrow it is then. :) I'll be sitting on the steps nearest Georgia, since I believe that's the front entrance. lol Of course, Golden Age….

Will have to.

Thanks. ^^

Cool. :) I'll give you a call when I'm getting close, and I'll let you know if I get held up by the stupid ferry or something. *grin*
