Oh dear god in heaven... I was quite enjoying the movie until about half way through. Until the titular character appeared, in fact. But honest to GOD. Did we need ten bazillion scenes of a giant ape falling in luurve with the little white blond chick? And her inexplicably feeling the same way? I just... I lost it at the skating scene in Central Park, ya'll, seriously. What the hell was that? The first half or so of the movie was a perfectly decent action movie, the second part was an overwrought romantic melodrama. Which might have been okay if it was remotely believable and not, you know, between a giant ape and a human being. Sorry Peter Jackson, I wasn't feeling the emotion at all. The CGI was all good at all, and he emoting quite nicely and all, but the emotions just seemed so contrived (especially on her half) that I coulnd' tbelieve them at all. And jeez, poor Adrien got screwed over. "My girlfriend loves a giant ape more than me! Woe is me! But I'm still going to go chasing after her through New York because I'm just such a big damned hero and I love her even if frankly she's kinda screwed up" (because seriously, climbing up the ladder to reach Kong? Putting aside the eyeroll-inducing emotions involved, what did she plan to do? Besides stare into his eyes, wave her arms around ineffectually, and yell a lot. And cry.

Pity, really, because I really did enjoy the first half. I liked the human stuff, in NYC at the start, then on the boat, then when they were discovering the island (creeepy...) Then it just went all downhill and by the end Dad and I were mocking it mercilessly.

Oh well, at least I discovered how gorgeous Adrien Brody is. I thought he was fantastic in The Pianist, but never found him attractive. I was wrong, ya'll. :) He was virtually the only thing that saved the movie for me in the end and kept me watching (though I rather enjoyed Jack Black, too. Even though his eyebrows make him looks evil sometimes (is it just me??)).

You know, I liked Peter Jackson in LotR, too, and I generally defend him re: those movies. But this... christ, what made him think that severe melodrama was the best way to go? LotR was actually reasonably devoid of this sort of extreme melodrama, and actually had some real heart. I'll thank Tolkien for that... see, this is why Jackson needs to stick to the source material when making films. I've never seen the original Kong so I can't say about that, though from what Dad says they certainly... deviated. And generally speaking, with LotR the worst (or at least good, because I do love those films) parts are the ones that severely deviated from the film. I don't mean minor changes, those were fine generally, but some of the ridiculous big additions (evil!Faramir? Denethor's dive off of Minas Tirith? Frodo telling Sam to leave and Sam actually leaving?) were just.. not good. The best dialogue was generally the stuff that was the same or similar to Tolkien's. Telling, isn't it?

Meh. I still like him, generally, at least based on LotR. But I don't know WHAT he was thinking in this movie. Here's hoping that if he does The Hobbit that it'll be good... still want him to do it, overall. So long as they get Ian Mckellan back.

On the more positive side, the movie really was beautifully shot. Jackson has a knack with making his films look very, very pretty and utilizing the landscape and special effects to their full potential. My main complaint was that, once again, he often used those things for the same of extreme melodrama - all those sunsets and the light framing her face? Jeeesus. When she appeared with the light behind her in New York, walking towards Kong, I just died. Christ.

And now for something completely different. Except not really. Adrien Brody mini-picspam! All pictures from http://www.brodylicious.org, but linked to Imageshack because stealing bandwidth is wrong, ya'll.

Okay, now that? Is adorable. Ridiculously adorable. He's so cute and adorkable and he has floppy hair. Nuff said.

Some photographer out there somewhere realized at some point that this boy looks good in suits. Especially old-fashioned suits. I fully approve.

I swear, he progressivley lost more and more of his clothing in the jungle... or at least his shirt got progressively more open until it was just completely open and we could fully see how his undershirt clings to his chest and abs and ummm... sorry, distracted. Also, the sprawling. On the ground. Um.

Okay, I'm done. :) It's funny; he's not really conventially handsome, so to speak, but there's something intriguing and irresistable about his face - he's got quite a unique look. And he's adorkable. And did I mention the floppy hair?

God I'm shallow today.

Bed now. Bowfest tomorrow! Yay! Gonna be in the parade, then hooopefully the boss will let me go down to the field to stand at the tent/table and give out info about the CU. We're going to have brochures and stuff, but I think it'd be nice to have a person there. And she did say she'd like me to be there, so hopefully it'll work out.

Though this all assumes that it won't rain. 60% chance of precipitation tomorrow... fingers crossed!

Bed now. For real.
