I understand what you're saying, but I dunno; I'm a character guy, I guess. When I follow a show, it's all about the immersion. I liked to get sucked into the world that the show tries to express. Typecasting actors in my mind, and then after a while seeing them in another role, kind of shakes that immersion for me.
I still get startled a little every time I see James Marsters on Smallville. >.>
You'd think the same would apply to movies for me, but it doesn't. I suppose it's because that most movies are one-shots, or easy to become detached from after a while. Meh..
I've never been one to follow actors, though. I get into new shows mainly by whether or not they sound interesting. Then if the show pulls it off, I stick with it; if not, well.. that's it.
It's funny - now that I think about it, I haven't followed too many serialized shows..
