Update on my life, woo.

Things have been pretty crazy since last week. On Wednesday, my parents went up to the new house for the first time and started moving furniture and stuff in, and I went out to my grandparents' place for the night. Thursday, I went up to the house w/ my grandparents - only the second time I'd been there! ^^; Stayed up there for a few days, and have been back and forth all weekend. We're in North Van for now; I think I'm going up again either tomorrow or early on Thursday. The house is wonderful - it looks so much nicer in real life than in the photos, and it's much nicer actually being up there now that we own it and we have some of our stuff there. Lots of bugs up there, though. :( My room up there is very spartan right now; mostly it's just my mattress from down here that Dad brought up a few days ago. I don't like sleeping down on the floor, though - too near the bugs. ;p We've bought another bed that will come to N. Van (for now), and we're bringing up the rest of my old bed so I won't have to sleep on the floor anymore. Eventually we'd prefer to have the new bed up there, though, since we're trying to get the newer/nicer stuff up there.

The island itself is really nice. There are only two village areas, with a few stores/restaurants/etc. It's very much a 'small community' feeling, which is nice because it's laid back and everyone's friendly (and they all know our house and the previous owners! ^^; It's pretty funny.). We've got a couple of beaches near our place; one that's a public beach, and one that's more private and unknown. Most of the island's just forest; we drove around parts of it on Thursday.

I've got a couple of potential jobs lined up already. I seem to already have jobs at both a deli and the video store; I went in and talked to the managers and they both pretty much asked me to come in on the spot. The video store wants me for Friday/Saturday nights, so if I stick with these two jobs then I'll work the deli around those hours.

Meanwhile, however, I'm waiting on a possible job at the library which would be much, much better. It's a summer position for a full-time student who would organize and run their kids' summer reading club. I talked to one woman at the library who gave me some details about the job. Evidently the kids (5-12) meet once a week and do arts & crafts and other activities, and then they also have a reading list. I would organize all the activities, promote the club, and put on the meeting every week. It's 30 hours a week and pays relatively well (more than $8 min wage, anyway), for I think 10 weeks (4 days a week). Once I'd gotten over the initial "I hate kids, ew!" reaction, I realized that I actually have some ideas for it. ^^ My main issue with the club as it seems to have been run in the past is that it has very little to do with actually reading. Evidently there's a 'theme' every week or something, and they do arts & crafts based on that theme and, I guess, theoretically read books on that theme. None of which is actually getting them involved and interested in the books and reading. Way I see it, a better way to organize the meets would be around the books themselves. Like, they read the book, and then we talk about it and do activities based on it. Get them interested in the characters, story, etc. I'm going to talk to the woman in charge of the program today, hopefully; I called her but she was out to lunch. I applied on Saturday, and the ad had just come out the previous day. Applications close on June 4th, and the job starts June 21st (which is right after my course ends, so it's perfect). I'm hoping to talk to her for a minute to find out exactly what's involved in the job (because the other woman I talked to didn't really know...) and basically pimp myself as much as I can. ^_^;; The idea of working with kids still frankly scares the shit out of me, but I like the organization aspect of it and I think it would be a more exciting challenge than making sandwiches in a deli...

Btw, [livejournal.com profile] bronzejarith, I got a message from the rec centre about the volunteering work that you recced me for - I appreciate the thought, but right now I'm looking for paying work up on the island. Thank you anyway. ^_^

Think that brings me up to date. I'm not doing much today; mostly recovering from the dentist this morning, aka the fact that I can't feel part of my face. Ugh. ;_; On the plus side, I managed to get the appointment during Buffy so I had something to distract me. ^_^ I should really do some studying; I've been very lazy so far in this course...

Island..
Possibly empty 'beach house'..
Private beach..

This is how porno movies start !! :o

Anyway yeah, I was wondering why you weren't posting on Livejournal; haven't heard from you for a while.

I'm kind of jealous actually (haha), because we never do crazy shit like going out and impulse buying a house on an island or something. It's...boring. :/

And bad horror flicks. On second thoughts, those probably have porn in them, so... ;p

Yeah, I haven't gotten around to posting recently. Partially cause I've been busy and haven't had much computer access, and partially cause I'm lazy. ^^;

:( Well, if it's any consolation you're welcome to visit! Just not overnight, cause you ain't getting any porn movies out of this. ^_-

Yep.

I'll come visit and stay until like, 10 PM and then be like "Omg it's late. I'm tired and the ferry service is probably closed for the day; you know, I think I'll just stay the night. . .¬_¬"

Well, I'm amazed that you've managed to move so far on the job stuff, way to go! It seems they're just itching for help in the island. Very friendly neighbourhood, nice place for kids to grow up. And you mean the library on the island, or Parkgate? I think it would be very interesting work, managing things for kids ... you're going to have to mediate a lot, though, I hope they're well-behaved for your sake. *laughs* And no worries on the volunteer thing, they called me and I thought to pass the message on if you didn't have anything else to do for the summer.

Yeah, they're pretty laid back and friendly up there. ^_^ It wasn't very hard at all to get a few possible min-wage jobs lined up. And the library job is at the Bowen Island library (tiny little place! ^^). I talked to the woman in charge yesterday and she gave me a v. quick overview - sounds like a lot of work, but an interesting challenge. Though I think they're expecting an awful lot of one person for $10/h. ^^;; Well, she'll start calling for interviews after the 4th, so I'll just wait and see...
