If things do start going badly, then look at task manager and close down the programs with high mem usage and high cpu usage, so that the video component has as much resources open to it as possible.

Player and codec choice is also important. Nowadays it's just best to fuck separate codec packs (e.g., CCCP, K-Lite, Nero; of which the latter two should never be used) and get a self-contained player like SMPlayer, MPlayer, or KMPlayer. Keeps it clean and simple.
