I couldn't bring myself to finish FFXII either, and FFX for that matter. Fact of the matter is, RPGs need a good story, a good cast, and-or very good gameplay. You're drawn in and want to find out what happens, or the game is fun enough that it becomes a viable activity for passing the time. FFXII, FFX, and DQVIII don't possess many of these qualities (if any at all).

Come to think of it, the PS1-era was the best for RPGs. Most 8-bit and 16-bit RPGs had really shallow stories and very basic gameplay. Most wouldn't be able to stand these days. Some had very notable ideas, though.

Plus, RPGs are a big time commitment. Once you actually get started with one, it takes a few hours just to get anything done. Just being in full-realization of this is enough to turn me away.
