FF ramblings

I happened to check Rpgamer.com a few minutes ago and noticed that FFIII:DS comes out today (I haven't really been keeping track...). I'm probably just being too over-emotional, but this day feels rather historic in the RPG world - the last Final Fantasy that wasn't released in the US is finally here. I checked, and it's been approximately 16.5 years since FFIII was released in Japan - well, better late than never, I guess. XD I mean sure, I played it years ago on a translated ROM and I won't be buying this version anytime soon (lack of a DS... and lack of time to play. woe.), but it's still cool to think that it's here. It's sort of a pity that the original version of the game will never make it here, most likely (how hard would it have been to include the orignal version in the new game, really...?), but the new version looks pretty spiffy. Hopefully I'll get to play it someday.

3 FF games in the past 2 weeks, 2 of which are new to the US (FFXII and FFIII:DS) and one of which only ever made it here in a mangled fashion (FFV Advance) - makes me miss the days when I could play all the time... I haven't really been into gaming as much the last few years, largely because of a. lack of time during school, b. other interests take up my free time, and c. i'm lazy., but I still get excited hearing about games and still want to play when I get the chance. I'm way behind on all the games I'm playing, but I still plan to ask for either FFXII or Disgaea 2 for Christmas (leaning towards the latter - FFXII will be easy enough to find for years to come, and it'll get cheap fairly quickly, whereas Disgaea 2 will start disappearing soon...). I am sorely tempted by FFXII, though - it's been getting fantastic reviews, and hell, it's FFXII! We've been waiting for this game for years, and it's finally here... and I really can't justify the time or money to get it. Part of me, too, is still a bit uncertain about it - but most of the reviews have said that the game is nothing like (and much better than) anything we've seen of it to this point, including the demo. I plan to give it a chance eventually, but can't do it yet.

And... I'm procrastinating. Back to my Farscape paper... it's due tomorrow at 9, so I need to get moving. Up to 5 pages, need about 12 - and I'm still blathering on about the context, haven't even gotten to analysing the series itself! Ehehehe. baaack to work.

Went to bed at 5 am last night, and I got up at 11. Might watch the hockey game at 6, but other than that, I have nothing going on. Stupid day.

Watch 28 Days Later.

I need tea.

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Exciting. :) I never do anything on New Years, either... last year was I believe the one and only time in my life that I've actually gone out. And that was just to Ryan's place for movies and drinks overnight... how exciting. XD

We're thinking of renting a movie for tonight, but I doubt my parents will want to see that. ;p I'll try sometime... maybe once/if I get my own place (waiting for that girl to call me back... thinking I should try calling her again, in case she didn't get my message).

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Watch it on your laptop or something. :p

We through a party here for the other tenants a few years ago.. Does that count as doing something? Of course I just sat in my room and watched TV.. Still.

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, maybe. :) It's old, so it'll only be a couple of bucks at the Bowen video store. And I can watch it on my PS2 in my room... I'll think about it. :)

Hey, it's more than we usually do. Though we're going to dinner at my grandparents' place tonight, so I suppose that counts for something. And last night we went to see the lights at Van Dusen Gardens, which was mostly just an exercise in being cold and hungry while wandering around looking at lights. It was quite remarkable, I'll grant, but I don't do well with walking about in the freezing cold for half an hour. ;p But we've been trying for years to go to it, and every year we miss it.

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Does Van Dusen still have that hedge maze? I remember going through it on a field trip in elementary school. Also, do you know how long they'll have the lights up? My Dad would probably love to take the camera there.

If you watch it soon, while I Am Legend is still fresh in your mind, you can do something really nerdy like compare the two in a LiveJournal post. :p

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
It might.. I saw a sign pointing to 'maze'. But I didn't see it. And I believe tomorrow's the last night it's on, but you might want to check around online.

Lol, indeed. ;) I wouldn't put it past me...

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I ever went through that maze legitimately. I remember there was a hole stretched open in one of the hedges near the back, and I used that to get through. I saw other people doing it so I thought it was the correct path. :\

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Lol. XD I got scared off to mazes after I got lost in one at Disneyland or somewhere as a kid.

Back from Blockbusters. We got Shaun of the Dead. :) I checked out 28 Days Later, though will get it from Bowen because it's cheaper - I didn't know that Chris Eccleston was in it. Shiiiny. :) Made me more inclined to see it, lol - he's a good actor (and more importantly, he's the Doctor, and *coughsexycough*).

Anyways, I did pick up FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus in the used game section - $14.99, and then I got to the till and it was 30% off! So it was only $12. ^__^

Gotta go now, heading to grandparents' place and the island. Ttyl.

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, cool. Shaun of the Dead is another good one. I was wondering if you had seen that since we watched Hot Fuzz. Let me know what you think of it.

"You've got red on you."

I heard Dirge of the Cerberus was pretty bad, gameplay-wise. I'm personally on the lookout for Ico (as far as PS2 games go), which is the story sequel to Shadow of the Colossus. The director has me hooked. I think in that game there were a grand total of about four cutscenes (including the beginning and end), but the emotion and story conveyed by the music and imagery was far richer than most cutscene-intensive games.

I emailed those guys at AZ Video Games, but they haven't gotten back to me. They said they might have VP1. I hope they have Swap Magic as well, for imports. I should've asked if they have Ico as well. Oh well. :\

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm looking forward to watching it. I really enjoyed Hot Fuzz, and I've heard that SotD is just as good.

Hell, I don't even care - it was only $12. XD Anyway, I checked out some reviews and it sounds decent. And Vincent was one of my favourite characters in FFVII.. I figure it'll be mildly entertaining, at least.

What is Shadow of the Colossus, anyway? I remember you picking it up at Blockbuster that time - what genre is it?

Happy New Years in 1.5 hours, btw. :)

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Shadow of the Colossus is a free-roaming action RPG where you have to track down and kill 16 colossi in order to revive a girl. The things are enormous - like if you get right up next to one its foot takes up the entire screen. Here's a really nice trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vuPyAOH41E

Yeah, I found it at Blockbuster; $12 new, which is a steal.

65 minutes to go.

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, interesting. I skimmed down the review list on Gamefaqs - most between 8-10. Sounds good... maybe I'll borrow someday, though I have a huge unfinished/unstarted list. ;p (and yet, I start replaying Xenogears...)

They had some other stuff I was tempted by, for between $9.99 and $19.99. Nothing I really cared about, just RPGs I'd vaguely heard about and thought might be decent, that were just so darned cheap. I was searching for Disgaea 2, however, though I didn't find it. It's $49 new and $44 used at EBGames... *sigh* Waiting until it drops to at the most $29.99. Or else will keep on the lookout at Blockbusters (hell, I don't even know if they have it to rent...).

52 minutes. :)

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I still have...the two Final Fantasies, but I'll have to check.

If you're desperate for Disgaea 2, then you could probably call AZ Video Games (http://www.wishtrade.com/AZVideogames/ ugliest site ever) and ask if they have it. I think they charge something like $10 for a used game. It's on Broadway, too.

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
We should go there someday... see what they have. :) I suppose I could also go out there on the way to UBC one day...

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
I wanted to see if they have what I'm looking for, but if they don't get back to me then I'll just have to stop by in person; not that I really want to go all that way just to check what they have - alone, that is.

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
2008-01-01 12:00 am (local)

Ahaha.. Perfect.

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
Nicely done. :) Effective way of getting 2 comments, too, lol.

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
I just think it'd be fun to check it out. :) See if they have old old stuff, too. I secretely still kinda want an SNES with FFIV and VI and CT. XD For all that they've been remade over and over, and in the case of FFIV possibly for the better (hard type versus easy type and all), I still like the idea of owning the original ones. :)

3 minutes!

2 minutes! (yeah, clock must've been a couple of seconds away when I wrote the above, lol)

ahem. Anyway, I looked the place up on Mapquest - it's ~Broadway & Fraser,. which is on the 99 B-Line's route. I could easily get there in about 30 minutes from UBC on that bus. Do you know your schedule for next term? Any chance you could come out on a Tues or Thurs? :) Before my class, really, since it's from 2:30-3. We could bus downtown, take the skytrain to Commercial & Broadway, and take the 99 B-line to Broadway & Fraser. It'd be a bit of a trip, though... at least an hour. It's up to you. :) I don't mind doing it on my way out to UBC one day.

Woops, 1 minute past now! Happy New Years! :)

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Happy New Years, etc

VP1, Ico, and Swap Magic 3 are all the things I'm looking for. If I find the latter I can start to import, but overseas availability isn't an issue because Japan cares more about old games. A lot more.

There's also the PSP and shit, but that's different.

Tuesday probably, but I'm not sure about Thursday - I may have a lab that afternoon. On Tuesday (and possibly Thursday) I'll be hitting Phibbs Exchange at 12:30 pm if I'm not let off late.

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really have any specific thing I'm looking for... and I don't need/want anything, really. I just like the idea. :)

Mmkay, that could work. I'd have to leave at 3:30, though - no way I could make my 2:00 class if we do it before. So I'd get there ~4. You're welcome to meet me out at UBC, or just meet at the store.

Haha, guess who just called? Jason. ^^; I gave him my cell # awhile ago on MSN (yeah, dunno why... well ,he asked, and it would seem rude to refuse) and he called to wish me happy new years. But my phone kept cutting out, lol, so we gave up. Oh wells. Didn't much want to talk, anyway. It's fun for awhile to talk with him, but within about 10 minutes it's "send me naked picturs! You're so seeexy now!" *headdesk*

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I could live without those. But if I were to go into a used games store, that's what I'd be looking for.

You'd have to leave at 3:30? Do you mean the school or the store? I don't imagine that we'd be at the store for very long; maybe like 15 minutes?

He probably thinks it's flattering. Or maybe by this point he's just doing it to push buttons, for some reason.

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, my class is 2-3:30. So if you were leaving Phibbs at 12:30, no way I could make it to the store then to UBC in time for my class. So I'd have to leave UBC at 3:30 and get to the store ~4. Then I suppose bus to Broadway & Commercial then take the Skytrain downtown to the Horseshoe Bay bus.

I think he thinks it's flattering. o.o I wouldn't mind it so much if he didn't start in on the more... sexual stuff. *eyeroll* Man even has the gall to bring up 'that time' in grade 12. *killz*
