FF ramblings

I happened to check Rpgamer.com a few minutes ago and noticed that FFIII:DS comes out today (I haven't really been keeping track...). I'm probably just being too over-emotional, but this day feels rather historic in the RPG world - the last Final Fantasy that wasn't released in the US is finally here. I checked, and it's been approximately 16.5 years since FFIII was released in Japan - well, better late than never, I guess. XD I mean sure, I played it years ago on a translated ROM and I won't be buying this version anytime soon (lack of a DS... and lack of time to play. woe.), but it's still cool to think that it's here. It's sort of a pity that the original version of the game will never make it here, most likely (how hard would it have been to include the orignal version in the new game, really...?), but the new version looks pretty spiffy. Hopefully I'll get to play it someday.

3 FF games in the past 2 weeks, 2 of which are new to the US (FFXII and FFIII:DS) and one of which only ever made it here in a mangled fashion (FFV Advance) - makes me miss the days when I could play all the time... I haven't really been into gaming as much the last few years, largely because of a. lack of time during school, b. other interests take up my free time, and c. i'm lazy., but I still get excited hearing about games and still want to play when I get the chance. I'm way behind on all the games I'm playing, but I still plan to ask for either FFXII or Disgaea 2 for Christmas (leaning towards the latter - FFXII will be easy enough to find for years to come, and it'll get cheap fairly quickly, whereas Disgaea 2 will start disappearing soon...). I am sorely tempted by FFXII, though - it's been getting fantastic reviews, and hell, it's FFXII! We've been waiting for this game for years, and it's finally here... and I really can't justify the time or money to get it. Part of me, too, is still a bit uncertain about it - but most of the reviews have said that the game is nothing like (and much better than) anything we've seen of it to this point, including the demo. I plan to give it a chance eventually, but can't do it yet.

And... I'm procrastinating. Back to my Farscape paper... it's due tomorrow at 9, so I need to get moving. Up to 5 pages, need about 12 - and I'm still blathering on about the context, haven't even gotten to analysing the series itself! Ehehehe. baaack to work.

The plot-threads that are open for next-season are:

1) Dean's necklace (Kripke said there's something special about it).
2) Evil-Sam.
3) Dean's 1-year thing.
4) Mary knowing about the Demon.
5) Tracking-down and killing the newly-emerged demons (a new villain will probably emerge from this).
6) Jo is still MIA, I think.
7) Gordon will probably make an appearance or play a bigger role (bleh).
8) FBI interfering again? Maybe.

That was a really good episode overall. I thought it was a bit too flashy for Supernatural's style, though; but maybe that's just me.

John making an appearance was the spoiler I knew. I thought he was going to play a part in Sam's revival, but I was wrong.

Smallville was also pretty good. I think Lex and Lionel are probably the best characters on that show. >.> Sucks that Chloe died though; I liked her. Lana probably just faked her own death or something.. D:

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-05-18 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
1. Yeah, always kinda wondered about that necklace...
2. Oooh yeah. Evil!Sam for real now, that's gonna be exciting.
3. *sniff*
4. Yeah... I wonder how they'll resolve that now that the Demon's dead and can't tell them?
5. Yup. Nice set-up for s3 there, all things considered.
6. Haha, don't particularly care. XD She'll probably return, though... but her mom is so much cooler. This show desperately needed a strong female, so I hope Ellen will stick around (and Bobby, of course).
7. Maybe. Though he is in jail now, so...
8. Yup, I suspect that will be an ever-increasing issue. And I assume that Hendrickson (sp?) will be back.

I didn't know anything about this ep, but having his name in the credits obviously spoiled his return. Kinda wish they hadn't had his name there, actually...

Mm, yeah, SV was good. Not sure if Chloe's dead yet... I read that her power will become important next season and therefore she wouldn't die, so we'll see. For a second thought that Lois would die and the 'Chlois' theory would be true (that Lois dies and Chloe takes her name and becomes the Lois in the future). Kinda liked that hteory. XD But long as Chloe survives, I'll be happy... I've suspected Lana will die for ages, and I was almost 100% certain she'd die this episode (though I think on some level I didn't really believe they'd have the guts to kill her - when her car exploded I was like, "wow, they actually did it!"). Still not trusting Lionel completely, and almost wondering if he rigged the car... but I don't think so. Not sure who it was, then, because ultimately I don't really believe it was Lex.

Heck of a cliffhanger, anyway. Lana presumably dead (though no body yet...) Chloe a maybe, and Lionel not looking particularly good. When I heard there would be possible multiple deaths this episode I expected it to be Lana and Lionel... since I'd heard that Chloe would survive and none of the other principles can die. Guess we'll see in September... dammit, they better not kill Chloe. ;__;

I suspect we'll be seeing John, Mary, or the Demon again in the third season, so that's probably how that thing with Mary will come up. It wouldn't surprise me if Gordon managed to break out or be released from jail (he didn't commit any crime, did he?). And yeah, I also like Ellen more than Jo, but we'll probably find out what Jo has been up to since we haven't seen her around.

Are you busy next week?

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hope to see John again in flashbacks... though I doubt we'll see him again otherwise. But I imagine they'll deal with it somehow, anyway.

Just posted my review, it's pretty long. :)

Working Monday, Saturday, and Sunday. Yeah, I needed to ask you about this... Do you want to come to Pirates on Friday? Jane and Lizzy are probably going that day, they're hoping to go to Metrotown at 12. I'd prefer later, but am willing to go then even though we'll need to get there early. We're bringing the build-a-bear cow that we made yesterday (we dressed it up as a pirate and named him Jack Sparrow... XD). I'd really like to go then, since it's opening day, but I also wanted to go with you. Do you think that day would work? Let me know if you can only do it later in the day (for an excuse better than "I don't want to get up early" XD) and I'll talk to them (going to anyway, actually - I'd prefer a showing around 2 or 3).

That aside, not busy. Could come down earlier if you wanted to do something; not really sure right now. Also waiting to hear back from Credit Union about job... meep. But probably wouldn't start training next week even if I get it, so should be open. Mom's coming down Tues to Wed, so could come down with her then.

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I want to go see Pirates of the Caribbean as well. Friday is fine. I'd prefer a 2:00 or 3:00 showing as well, but if that can't happen, then that can't happen.

I'd also like to go play pool again, to be honest. I had fun. But it's kind of shitty to have to go all the way up to Capilano just for an hour. But we could do that Blockbuster-thing on the way back though, if you want to do it then. Tuesday or Wednesday would work. I don't think I'll have any work (god damn, it's summer..move out people!~).

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. I'll talk to them. :)

Sure, that'd be cool... I need to figure out what I'm doing next week; I'm not sure when we're going down.. I dunno. Maybe Thursday would be better.

OT, remember we were talking about Hamlet earlier? I'm going to it sometime in the next month, wanna come? My parents shouldn't mind...

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Like an actual play? I'd love to. I could count the number of times I've been to a play on one hand. >.> Is it formal, or something?

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, an actual play. :) Cool, I'll talk to them. A friend of ours is playing the gravedigger. You ever seen a Shakespeare play live? And I'm not sure about how formal it is, I'll ask.

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Windsor held a performance of The Tempest from the drama/stage-craft class. Does that count? :o

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Windsor never did The Tempest, did they...? They did Midsummer Night's Dream in grade 9, though. And I suppose that counts. XD THough it's nice to see it done professionally. The absolute best was when we were in Stratford, England (Shakespeare's birthplace) and we say Romeo and Juliet put on by the Royal Shakespeare Company (I think). Fantastic performance.

Anyway, Dad says that's fine and that it's not very formal (it's at some arts and culture centre). So dress decently, but not like symphony-level, according to him. XD I'll let you know about times when we find out about getting the tickets.. cool, that'll be fun. :) I've only seen Hamlet onstage once and that was years ago, before I'd studied it. I've seen a fair amount of Shakespeare on stage, though - we used to go to Bard on the Beach (down near the Planetarium) pretty much every year. Not sure about this summer... *checks* R&J, Taming of the Shrew, Julius Caeser, and Timon of Athens. Huh. I'd like to see Julius Caeser, maybe... studied it last year. I dunno.

Anyway, I'm bored... just made a really pathetically lame post. Waiting for Grey's to download so I can see the rest. Blaaaaaah. XD

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was Midsummer Night's Dream. I thought it was The Tempest because you said The Tempast was fantasy-ish and I remember there being fairies and shit in the play.

Ok, let me know when you find out more.

I'm bored too. I'm reading this damn driver's manual. It's so..boring. D:

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-05-19 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, yeah. He's got a few like that. Or those two, at least...

Okay, Mom said we might be going this Tuesday night... I'll let you know for sure later.

Haha, how exciting. XD I'm just messing around.. listening to music, thinking about SPN, heh. Watching music videos. Playing Solitaire. Staring at my Grey's download (42%...).

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
Any more information about the play? Is it a shirt(untucked)+leather jacket or shirt(tucked)+tie-kind of thing?

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, I'm reasonably sure either is fine. XD I'll just be wearing normal pants and a vaguely nice-ish shirt... I'll ask my parents about tickets; hopefully they can just order yours then you can pay them back. I think it's ~$20, but not sure.

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, here's the webpage for the play:

http://www.centrecreativeinitiatives.com/hamlet.htm

Looks like they're basing it off of a Russian translation of the play, so it won't be the classic Shakespeare language.. huh. Should be interesting, anyway. It's only $8 that night too, yay! :) We'll book the tickets, then you can pay us back. And seriously, don't worry about clothing; it's casual. :)

I'm going to be in N Van all day Tuesday, afaik, so we can also do pool earlier that day.

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good, maybe I'll actually understand what they're saying. ;p

Huh.. What time is the play? We should leave to go play pool so maybe we have 1.5 hours of play-time, and then your parents can stop by the pool place and pick us up from there. Jerhico Arts Centre is at English Bay, which is past Lion's Gate Bridge, so Jazzy Cue's is technically on the way.. Thoughts?

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Lol. Yeah, understanding Shakespeare takes some practice... but skilled enough actors can make it comprehendable; the problem is when you get mediocre actors who mumble their lines and it can almost be impossible to understand them... I really have no idea what this translation will be like, and how similar it will be to the original.. hopefully fairly similar. o.o But different takes on Shakespeare can be interesting. Also, I find that if you're unfamiliar with the basic story that reading the summary in the program can be very very helpful. :)

It's at 8. So it's probably better if we play in the afternoon then go home for dinner. Since we should prob get there ~7:30.

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
If you want to; doesn't really matter to me how we do it. It just seems easier not to have to go back-and-forth, and you could try out the sushi they have there for dinner. :p
