FF ramblings

I happened to check Rpgamer.com a few minutes ago and noticed that FFIII:DS comes out today (I haven't really been keeping track...). I'm probably just being too over-emotional, but this day feels rather historic in the RPG world - the last Final Fantasy that wasn't released in the US is finally here. I checked, and it's been approximately 16.5 years since FFIII was released in Japan - well, better late than never, I guess. XD I mean sure, I played it years ago on a translated ROM and I won't be buying this version anytime soon (lack of a DS... and lack of time to play. woe.), but it's still cool to think that it's here. It's sort of a pity that the original version of the game will never make it here, most likely (how hard would it have been to include the orignal version in the new game, really...?), but the new version looks pretty spiffy. Hopefully I'll get to play it someday.

3 FF games in the past 2 weeks, 2 of which are new to the US (FFXII and FFIII:DS) and one of which only ever made it here in a mangled fashion (FFV Advance) - makes me miss the days when I could play all the time... I haven't really been into gaming as much the last few years, largely because of a. lack of time during school, b. other interests take up my free time, and c. i'm lazy., but I still get excited hearing about games and still want to play when I get the chance. I'm way behind on all the games I'm playing, but I still plan to ask for either FFXII or Disgaea 2 for Christmas (leaning towards the latter - FFXII will be easy enough to find for years to come, and it'll get cheap fairly quickly, whereas Disgaea 2 will start disappearing soon...). I am sorely tempted by FFXII, though - it's been getting fantastic reviews, and hell, it's FFXII! We've been waiting for this game for years, and it's finally here... and I really can't justify the time or money to get it. Part of me, too, is still a bit uncertain about it - but most of the reviews have said that the game is nothing like (and much better than) anything we've seen of it to this point, including the demo. I plan to give it a chance eventually, but can't do it yet.

And... I'm procrastinating. Back to my Farscape paper... it's due tomorrow at 9, so I need to get moving. Up to 5 pages, need about 12 - and I'm still blathering on about the context, haven't even gotten to analysing the series itself! Ehehehe. baaack to work.

Yeah, don't think we did finish it... god, I remember spending hours playing that. o.o

Carmen Sandiago was a good show... do they even HAVE shows like that for kids anymore? -_- And heh, yeah, I was pretty good. Mom and Dad used to quiz me on countries from the world map in my room when I was really young. :)

There's been a computer in my house for most of the life (Mom got one when I think I was ~2, for her work), but not sure when I started using them. Got the internet around '96, I think? Still remember the first ever webpage I went to... the Barney Fun Page. Remember that place? It was awesome. XD

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I bet you still can't finish it now. ;p

No, I don't think so.. Fun and educational children's (game) shows used to be pretty abundant in the early 90's. Then in the mid-90's they removed the educational aspect. I guess a few years later the popularity of game shows died out almost completely.

Those dates seem really off to me. I know I got a computer late, and I know that I got an Internet connection even later (at least two years after you). Going by your numbers that would mean I first got an Internet connection in 98, which would put us in grade 8. And I'm pretty sure I had the Internet before that.

But I could be wrong.. :/

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Probably not, no, considering that I appear to be worse at it than I used to be. XD

That's a pity. Children's programming was pretty good when I was a kid, but it seems to have gone downhill... I think there's still education stuff for very young kids, but not for say 6-10 year olds.

Eh, I could be wrong. Maybe it was 94 or 95 when we got Internet... lesse, I'm pretty sure I had it in grade 6, which was 96-7. Maybe had it in grade 5 (95-6), but don't think I had it earlier than that. I'd have to ask my parents.

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-03-16 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's sad how dependent on the Internet we've become. On Monday, I think, my Internet went down for about three hours. So I just sat there not knowing what to do; and eventually, I decided to take a nap.

Yeah. -_-

The main difference between children's programming is that back then there were more educationally oriented shows toward the 5-10 audience. Event still, there were still countless shows that were nothing but pure entertainment. But at least with those the main characters or whatever would hold a 30 second segment after the episode explaining the morals and values that were taught in that episode remembers Sailor Moon dub.

Haha, I'm the same way. My internet goes down, I freak. It was pretty bad last term, kept going off randomly. Ended up watching TV, playing Solitaire or Free Cell or, on occasion, actually using the time to study.

Yeah, there was more back then. Granted, I don't really know what there is these days for kids, but none of it seems very good based on channel flipping. Some pseudo-educational stuff, but nothing as good as the old stuff. Carmen Sandiago was great. :) And hah, I remember those damned 'moral messages' at the end of episodes - hated them, probably in large part because they were a dub creation. Plus it just seemed like the Americans HAD to add something in to teach kids something even though the show did a perfectly fine job of communicating good morals and ideas to kids without them. I preferred my education to come from actual educational shows, not feel-good messages at the end of my favourite entertainment. ^^; Though I suppose in retrospect they had a good purpose.

Didn't I say something awhile back about not upping the comment count in this thread through useless comments? XD

*shrug* I don't know.

Cadbury's Creme Egg

1/2 c light corn syrup
1/4 c butter, softened
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
3 c powdered sugar
4 drops yellow food coloring
2 drops red food coloring
1 12-ounce bags milk chocolate chips
2 tbsp vegetable shortening

Procedure
Combine the corn syrup, butter, vanilla, and salt in a large bowl. Beat well with an electric mixer until smooth.

Add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing by hand after each addition. Mix well until creamy.

Remove about 1/3 of the mixture and place it into a small bowl. Add the yellow and red food coloring and stir well to combine.

Cover both mixtures and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until firm.

When mixtures are firm, roll a small, marble-size ball from the orange filling, and wrap around it a portion of the white filling that is roughly twice the size. Form this filling into the shape of an egg and place it onto a cookie sheet that has been brushed with a light coating of shortening. Repeat for the remaining filling ingredients, then refrigerate these centers for 3-4 hours or until firm.

Combine the milk chocolate chips with the shortening in a glass or ceramic bowl. Microwave chocolate on high speed for 1 minute, then stir and microwave again for one more minute, and stir.

Use a fork to dip each center into the chocolate, tap the fork on the side of the bowl, then place each candy onto wax paper. Chill.

After 1-2 hours of chilling, dip each candy once more and chill for several hours, or until completely firm.
Makes 2 dozen candy eggs.

Hahaha. God, I tried to make that last year... they turned out horrible. XD It's probably the same recipe, too - where'd you get it from?

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-03-29 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Forums. Try it again this year, maybe they'll turn out better.

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-03-29 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt it. o.o

[identity profile] bk635.livejournal.com 2007-03-29 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't had these in a long time, actually.

[identity profile] ria-oaks.livejournal.com 2007-03-29 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Mmm, they're good. :) I find them too sweet now, though, so I only have them every once in awhile. You should grab one before they're gone. :)
